For years, I thought I wanted to teach art. I’ve always loved it, so teaching seemed a great way to pass on that love to others. I earned my B.A. in secondary education, with an art emphasis. Then, the realization hit that I didn’t want to teach art; I wanted to learn about life through the making of my own art. I need to be a maker to feel fulfilled, need to pour out my soul into something tangible.
Rainbows and watercolors first fueled my love in creating art. They were my favorites when I was two years old. Since then, my abilities and interests have evolved in complexity and meaning, but my love of color and paint still persists. My works usually incorporate graceful lines, regardless of the medium I choose to apply on a particular piece.
The female form involved in all aspects of life and experiences is what most interests me right now. I find myself drawn to the intricacy of the feminine, preferring using the symbolism apparent in women’s hair. In some cultures, a woman’s hair is never cut. I grew up listening to fairy tales in which the heroines had long hair and it has become an iconic symbol of the female in my mind. I use hair in many ways and for many different reasons. My current body of work is an exploration of this theme.
