Artists Statement

Originally from the Isle of Man, Katy now lives and works in the North East of England. Katy studied Fine Art at Central Saint Martins and graduated in 2004.  She has exhibited across London and the UK.

There are two main lines of enquiry in Katy’s work; the first arrives from a fascination with picture postcard imagery. These saturated, and often doctored images bare little or no resemblance to the original location, instead offering a picturesque utopian scene.

The second strand of the work originates from an on-going interest in visionary architectural drawings and models from the 1950s-60s. Although many of these proposed buildings were too far-fetched to build, architects often used methods similar to that of postcard photographers in making these places more appealing and visually engaging.

Drawing on the parallels between the architectural elements and postcard imagery, Katy intricately cuts and combines multiple images. This results in new and intriguing landscapes that are far removed from their original purpose and appearance. She is interested in the way these unachievable buildings and places can be experienced physically, often using set viewpoints in her sculptures as a way of controlling the viewers’ experience.
