Artists Statement

"Influenced by thoughts of discord and distortion, my work attempts to strike an awkward harmony within heavily painted surfaces. Using elements of action painting and lineal draftsmanship, each composition is saturated, overflowing with paint and form. Built up with multiple layers of oil paint thinned to a watercolour consistency, the unpredictability of dripped paint adds a gestural quality without the considered movement of a brush. Seemingly random runs of colour are interwoven with regimented mechanical lines and shapes. Other areas are withdrawn from the foreground and subdued by veil like washes of white paint, while the dominating shapes are raised off the surface with texture gels further channeling the flow of the dripped paint".

The paintings in my "Untitled (after… )" series are abstracted soundscapes informed by elements of contemporary music. Each piece consists of various aspects associated with the construction of a sound, from dark heavy excess to euphoric highs played out through the application of colour and density. Although the paintings are not visual reproductions of pieces of music, they are emotive responses to their mood and themes.

While not being aware of the particular musical inspiration, the viewer is invited to explore and translate the rhythmic quality of the marks into a language of their own.
