Artists Statement

The human nervous system is constantly evolving and being reshaped. We are visually bound and stimulated daily without always fully understanding the content or meaning behind what we are absorbing. Technology is often used as a medium over meaning, and is accompanied by a perpetual drive in todays society for the instant and the new.

Painting is a slow medium caught up in an ever increasing world of sophisticated visual stimuli. However, painting can provide us with a reason to pause, reflect and to find value. With painting we are required to keep coming back to the work and to take our time.

I view each of my paintings as a representation of what the concept of painting means to me. That is, the journey of the process and the search for forms that contain a resonance of meaning and embody a human experience. There is an absolute uncertainty when starting out with each painting, I use no visual source material and have no preconceptions of what the finished piece will be or its aesthetic. My focus is on exploring the unknown - the painting as an event, a stage for transformation to take place. This process allows the form of the painting to gradually emerge until it becomes congruent with itself. Marks, corrections and amendments are revealed on the surface; evidence of painting, repainting and overpainting on the path to completion.

Each of my works presents a contemplative aesthetic, a sense of mystery and an elegance in the abstract; a place where the mind as well as the eye can travel and inhabit.

Influences include Taoist philosophy, Physics, Psychology, Abstract Expressionism, Traditional Chinese painting, Graphic design, Architecture, Graffiti/Urban art.

Hi Darren , I like your profile photo !!

I am finding it difficult to find any artworks on here that I think are of a certain standard. Probably makes me sound extremely "picky'!! Your abstract paintings seem quite sophisticated, well particularly numbers 3 and 4 as one views them above.. I know from "hard" experience (just remembering the trauma of doing large paintings in "Barrio Gottico" in Barcelona, when I was doing my M.A.) -- how difficult it is to handle oil paint on such a large scale and to get the balance and ideas to interplay to a satisfactory resolution.
Have you ever heard of an artist called Pep Utrillo, I really liked his work. He exhibited with Galerie Maeght, there. I think you might find his stuff inspiring.
