My work is just as much about how it feels to touch as how it looks. I love texture and try to incorporate as many different materials and techniques into a piece as I can. Many pieces are made to be touched, some make sounds and some can even be smelt, as I believe that this interaction creates a personal experience with the artwork.
The use of found objects and recycled materials is also very important in my work: I love to use them as they feel far more special than something new, straight out of a pack. I have a great collection of strange and beautiful things that inspire me and from one object I can design a whole piece. My collection includes buttons, beads, bolts, wood, shells, bits of metal, glass, fabrics from many different places and people, and loads of wonderful oddities that looked interesting. These objects give an added history and mystery to my work that would be unachievable without them. To use a seemingly useless artifact and create something beautiful is an amazing feeling and to hear people’s reaction to what I’ve made with their old stuff, or the odd button I found in the pub, is wonderful.
