I studied Fine Art at the Kent Institute of Art and Design at Canterbury, specialising in Painting and graduating in 2003. Since then, I have moved to Bristol where I have a day job in marketing for a web design agency.
I work across many media, I don't feel that the medium should rule the work -paint, photography, collage, etc are my tools, to be used as appropriate to the theme of the work. Themes that I explore in my work are memory, nature, miniature, treasure and coincidence. Often, found objects and recycled materials help to support the pictorial element.
Treasure and miniature objects are key to my love of making bead jewellery. It has taken many years for me to learn to give up the piece to another person once I have assembled it, and not to invest too heavily in each individual bead. For a long time, beads were precious not just for the their beauty, but for the memory of acquiring them.
I have many precious and treasured objects found over the years. They are afforded pride of place in and around my home, as important as family photographs. They transport me to past events where I found or bought them, not in a romantic way, just as aide memoirs of everyday events I might have otherwise forgotten -walking down the high street to college; that boot fair last year, and so forth. Many of these objects are tiny or a only part of a larger object and are displayed in modified printers drawers hung on the wall.
I'm happy to explore these ideas with others, perhaps working with others' treasured objects to create a piece of work. I also do jewellery commissions, having made bride and bride's maids jewellery, statement pieces and co-ordinating sets for special occasions and outfits.
