Artists Statement

Making artworks is a combination of research, and the
physical process/ interaction with materials and media.   Out of this new 'meanings' and or 'connections' are arrived
at.   It is a constant process of renewal and discovery.  This is the impetus that maintains my drive as an artist. The
initial appeal though where my artwork is concerned, is through visual
aesthetics.  I explore a range of personal, sociological and psychological
contexts. Characteristic indicators, as to the nature of my work might include
the narrative, the symbolic, the ritualistic and the metaphoric.   It is work that is very much concerned with our symbolic and
metaphorical selves and our relationships with others in the past and in the
present. Political potency on an individual and institutional basis recurs as a
particular concern in my work. I am very interested in exploring how we relate
to ourselves, as well as to our environment and to one another.   As in for example, our 'self image' versus how we are
perceived in various social and institutional contexts. It is doubly ironic
that, although I am critical in response to my Catholic upbringing within my
work, none-the-less I use ritualistic as well as iconic/ schematic aspects of
its visual language and culture within my artworks.
