Portsmouth born painter Joanne Webb has attracted much attention playing with our naturalistic fascination for illusionistic scale and the certain power within the space of our imagination.

Joanne seeks to create a suspended bridge reminiscent of Bosch and Chagall, an enchanted and still place where the viewer can engage in a childlike state as they gaze on this collection of eccentric recent works.

Since 1998 her works have relied heavily on landscape and iconographic paintings depicting the debris of ideas formed in Americas mid west, but here we something else emerging.

Like dream writing, empathic and beyond consciousness this new voice is generating a joy for the beautiful image once again. This accomplished painter often with vigorous crudity interlinked with the delicious feeling for attention to detail produces a heart felt tight rope in which we are able and invited, to enjoy a poetic landscape and fresh new vision.

Large owls dwell beside sprites on stilts, half men half bird creatures relinquish and baptize themselves in pools of turquoise water and new intuitive landscapes enable the angel to return to contemporary dialogue and feel at home.

These deceptively simple spaces are built on layer upon layer of high pigment oils on gesso panels evocative of more traditional master painters.

This trendy twist and new appreciation for the triptych and the surrounding frame metaphorically embodies a world of archetypes and a fascination for unexplainable, reminding us that a world void of shock, horror and the explicit is not always necessary to be deemed good art.
