Born in Surrey, UK, the most wooded county in England, Doug King-Smith has a love of wood.
Having set up and run a community arts centre in East London, Doug moved home to the woods where he began making sculptures from wood.
Committed to ecological living - his choice to use a chainsaw to create his sculptures is interesting... if not essential to his current explorations in sculpture.
Resulting in delicate forms described by Anthea Tuckey, owner of Birdwood Gallery Devon, as 'taking a medium as far as it can go... it is amazing what (Doug) can do with (his) chainsaw'... for Doug it is the process of creating his works which inspires him most.
Each piece is carved from a single slab of wood, principally Oak or Sequoia. By using a chainsaw, Doug is fascinated by the process of controlling such a primal force, something quintessentially destructive, and to transform this base energy into something subtle and dynamic... organic and liberating. By coming face to face with our primal energy and staying centred - the outcome is something very beautiful.
