Artists Statement

Leaving the work I had always loved in the medical field, I eventually gave in to my creative side that was always tugging at my heart. Painting on “anything that didn’t move” since I was a child, roughing it up and making new old again, I was creating the primitive shabby look long before it was the cool thing to do!

Having studied at the McNay Art Institute, and under the direction of other renowned artist such as Neecie Sapp in my hometown of San Antonio, Texas, I continued to paint only part-time for many years and always dreamed of owning my own business.

Once having my children and choosing to stay at home was advantageous in many ways. It gave me a chance to be here 24-7 for the children, create, and help contribute to the family by setting up at Bazaars, Markets and Shows selling my handmade goodies! Painting murals, re-decorating for clients, and designing and producing my own line of clothing kept me occupied.

I remembered working with patients in hospitals and was always providing creams and lotions to those that had dry, scaly and taunt skin. A lot of it was due to the dry air, medication or hard water but I knew from my own experience that commercial soap played a big part in the drying out of our skin. Even though the soaps I carried in my store were good, I knew I could make an even better soap. And so the quest began!

Soap has been with us for a long time. Excavations of ancient Babylon uncovered cylinders with inscriptions on making soap around 2800 B.C. Later, records found from ancient Egypt described how animal and vegetable oils were combined with alkaline salts to make soap. What is then added to this basic and ancient soap recipe is what makes all the difference! Taking my medical knowledge and researching the proper oils that hydrate, nurture and are actually good for your skin took time but the effort has been well worth it! This closely guarded soap recipe (my own and in the process of being patented) also uses Goat’s Milk straight from the farm. This adds Vitamins A, B C D and E to each luxurious bar! Most of the recipes incorporate actual silk thereby adding just one more dimension to an already luxurious bar of soap! Many of my customers are claiming to actually see a reduction in fine lies around their eyes and friends and family comment on the noticeable change. While this may not be the case for everyone, the days of taunt, itchy and dry skin are gone for good after using this wonderful soap. I also realize that many prefer natural healthy products and so I make sure that the herbs and additives used are Certified Organic. Like wise, not everyone wants an animal product such as Goat’s Milk so I offer soap without the milk as well. Adding medicinal soaps to my line has also proven fruitful! Soap for Eczema, Acne and even an all-natural Doggy soap are sold almost as fast as I can produce it! I also now make and provide an Intensive Lotion Bar loaded with Vitamin E and soothing oils that can help those cracked heels, dry cuticles!

I haven't forgotten my art and still continue to paint "on anything that doesn't move" and make my one of a kind primitive dolls, whenever I am not up to my elbows in soap!
