Artists Statement

I am a Textile Artist living and working in North East Lincolnshire, UK.
My work has a strong tradition of drawing developed from my art education at Grimsby School of Art, and both St Martin’s School of Art and Goldsmith’s College where I was taught by Christine Risley, Eirian Short and the indomitable Constance Howard who have all influenced my way of working ever since.

On graduating from Goldsmiths College with a first class honours degree in Textiles/Embroidery in 1975 I was invited to join the 62 Group by Eirian Short and exhibited with the Group the following year in Greenwich .
I returned to my hometown of Grimsby in 1975 and became a partner/designer in a clothing retail and manufacturing business which then took over my life for the next 28 years .

In 2003 I returned to my stitched Textile work and have been working and exhibiting regularly ever since.

In 2008 I had 2 pieces of work selected for the prestigious ‘Art of the Stitch’ International Open Exhibition 2008/9 (Biennial Exhibition presented by the Embroiderer’s Guild in association with Coat’s Crafts) -2 pieces selected from 944 entries of which 56 were chosen to be shown.
In October 2008 I was invited to rejoin the 62 Group of Textile Artists, a group established in 1962 to provide opportunities for professional textile artists to exhibit and promote their work both nationally and internationally.

My images are usually autobiographical. They are personal but not sentimental and often what ‘at first glance’ appears to be homely, on closer inspection reveals itself to be slightly surreal. I use thread and stitch as a painter would use paint and brushes, each stitch making a mark of colour, multiplying and building until it has filled the canvas. My stitch vocabulary is simple and straightforward - straight stitch, chain stitch, blanket stitch and needleweaving. Working with stranded cotton means that I can vary the number of threads in the needle and mix colours - much as a painter would mix colours in a palette.
