A Winter's Day II, 08408, snowy stream in winter

By Carol Nelson

I've painted this little stream before from a different angle. I think it's all the shades of blue I use for the snow and water that makes is so fun for me. I used combinations of cobalt blue, prussian blue, and ultramarine blue. Also Paynes grey, which is really a shade of blue also.

This painting also has the palette color notes on the side.

Email Newsletter

By Carol Nelson

Yesterday I created my first email newsletter through my website. I plan on publishing a newsletter about once a month and sending it to my subscribers via email. To begin with, I entered all the email contacts I had into a subscriber data base. These were people who had inquired about, or purchased work from me previously.

I know it's a little presumptive of me to enroll everyone, but there is an unsubscribe button they can choose, and then they will not be bothered with subsequent newsletters in their in-box.

In the newsletter, I will talk about upcoming events, workshops, newest work, and any other news from my studio. Anyone interested in receiving future newsletters is invited to subscribe on my website. Click EMAIL NEWSLETTER in the left hand column.

Cream & Sugar, red glass antique dishes

By Carol Nelson

This set belonged to my Mother, who received it as a wedding present 78 years ago. I have always loved the intense red of the glass.

This painting is on board mounted in a shadow box black frame.

Blue and Gold, 08308, fall foliage in Colorado

By Carol Nelson

Another fall landscape you say? Yes, I can't get enough of a good thing. Is is any wonder I go through cadmium yellow paint faster than any other color? I use a lot of the complement, dioxazine purple, too.

Home Depot for Art Supplies - Construction 3

By Carol Nelson

This post is dedicated to the memory of Barbara Haukenberry. An avid collector of artwork from many artists in Daily Painters, Barbara purchased many of my mini abstracts. She saw beauty in so many different styles of art. We will all miss her.

This is the third of my mini abstracts utilizing Home Depot materials. This one has aluminum flashing, tiny wire nails, and tyvek. I also used "suede paper" - looks like suede but is actually paper from Michaels, and corrigated art paper from an art supply store.

Home Depot for Art Supplies - Construction 2

By Carol Nelson

This little abstract features Tyvek, a paper-like product made by Dupont. In the building industry, it is used to wrap foundations for a vapor barrier. It has many other uses because of it's strength and light weight. FedEx uses large envelopes made of Tyvek for shipping.

The cool thing about using Tyvek for artistic purposes is the unusual transformation that takes place when you apply heat from an iron to the paper/fabric. It shrinks and bubbles and melts, leaving you with a very unusual surface. I usually paint the paper before I shrink it. That adds to an element of unpredictablility that I love.

I also used copper tacks and copper wire on this one.

Home Depot for Art Supplies - Construction 1

By Carol Nelson

I love creative challenges. I've been asked to do a workshop on abstract painting, specifically covering the use of metals. I have used metals in some of my works and I find a lot of my supplies in big box hardware stores.

It is fun to wander around these stores looking at building supplies and thinking outside the box. When asked if I need help, I usually say no thanks because I don't know what I'm looking for, but I'll know it when I see it.

I worked up 3 small demo pieces, each 5x7, using a variety of materials. They are all on MDF board painted black. This one features copper (sold as copper flashing), burlap, copper tacks, and quarter inch wood trim.

Cold and Crisp, 07808, winter mountain snow scene

By Carol Nelson

I'm not sure if I'm done with this one. I like the limited pallette and the linear elements of this painting. I was striving for a "painterly effect" with fluid loose brush strokes, but I may tidy it up a bit after it drys a couple days.

Autumn Splendor, 07708, fall foliage in mountains

By Carol Nelson

I never tire of painting the Colorado mountains, especially when they are decked out in their fall colors. This scene is southwest of Denver, near Kenosha Pass.

Iowa Farm, view 4, 07608 private commission

By Carol Nelson

This is the fourth autumn view of this Iowa farm. This farm is the family homestead and the paintings of scenes around the farm will be a Christmas present for Mom and Dad. The fields have corn as far as the eye can see. I love doing paintings of America's heartland. Those of us living in cities rarely give a thought as to the origins of our corn chips and ethanol. I'm really happy to announce that my painting, Grand Canyon 1, has been purchased by the city of Lone Tree, CO for their civic center. Please scroll down to the September 1 post. Now the problem is that I painted a companion piece, making it a diptych, but now the first half of the diptych is sold. I'm lucky to have such problems. ; - )

Iowa Farm, view 2

I'm working on four views of an Iowa farm in autumn. The photos sent to me were taken in the summer, so I had to create the colors of fall.

South Rim, 4 part geologic abstract

By Carol Nelson

This series of abstract paintings was inspired by the colors and textures of the Grand Canyon. The view is straight down from the south rim. The cool colors of the water contrast with the warm canyon walls.

Each painting is framed with a 2.5 inch deep black wood frame. Finished dimension of each painting is 12x12 inches.

Canyon View, in progress

By Carol Nelson

This is what I'm working on presently. There will be four panels, each about 12x12 inches. Of course, it's another geological abstract using lots of texture. This all started because I got a good buy on black shadow box frames that I modified to hold birch panels. Each painting will stand on it's own, but they if they are hung in a line, the paintings will flow from one to the other.

Self Portrait Puzzle

By Carol Nelson

I'm happy to report my self portrait on 9 mini canvases was accepted into the portrait show (see earlier post) and will be on the COVER of the calendar they are producing. What's interesting is that the cover version will be one of the above scrambled images. How fun is that!!
I'm glad they had a sense of humor and enjoyed my Picasso version of myself.

Orange 2

Self Portrait, 06808

By Carol Nelson

A call for entries went out from a local art group for artists to do their self portrait. Sometimes I have these great ideas at 5am - I think about paintings in bed - that in the light of day are not such great ideas after all.

With this painting, I thought it would be really unique to paint my portrait on this 9 pack of 4x4 gallery wrap canvases. I thought it would make my effort stand out from the crowd. It turned out to be a reall pain in the a--! The canvases don't line up perfectly and there are uneven gaps between them.

I set my camera on my easel and stared into it as if I were looking at a painting. I know I look at paintings in progress in this pose because I often get paint on my chin! My brother thought I looked mad. No. It's supposed to be a contemplative pose. sigh.
There's a few things I like about the painting. I thought I captured the shadows of my glasses really well. Also like my hand. And, of course, a random rearrangement of the canvases, yields a Picasso-like version of me!! LOL I will let you know if my portrait is accepted and/or wins anything.

Fall Bouquet, 06708

By Carol Nelson

Not every painting is successful. I was trying for spontaneity wielding a loose palette knife. It's not really there. I had to really work it. And it fell face down on the floor at one point.
It DOES have lots of texture and my favorite colors, so that's a plus. One instructor told me, when all else fails, use splatter. I laughed to myself as I used the toothbrush to splatter on the white.
If you want this painting (11x14) for $100, send me an email.

Grand Canyon, 06608, acrylic geologic diptych

By Carol Nelson

If you pair Grand Canyon 1, 06308, and Grand Canyon 3, 06508, together, you get this fantastic diptych. Obviously, I wasn't thinking about a diptych when I painted the first one, or I wouldn't have ended up with such name confusion.

I also messed myself up by entering Grand Canyon 1 in a competition. I NOW want to sell these as a diptych, but if the first one sells on it's own, I guess I'll have to paint it again to complete the diptych. : - (

Grand Canyon 3, 06508, acrylic geologic abstract

By Carol Nelson

Another painting in this Grand Canyon series. This painting, when paired with Grand Canyon 1, 06308, makes an attractive and impressive diptych. I don't know if it's my camera or my monitor, but the actual painting is not quite as bright. The colors are more sublte and not as garrish.

Grand Canyon 2, 06408, acrylic geologic abstract

By Carol Nelson

This is another of my geological abstracts. This painting has a textured surface and multiple glazes of color for a rich, interesting surface. Painted on gallery wrap Signature canvas, it arrives ready to hang.

Grand Canyon 1, 06308, acrylic geologic abstract

By Carol Nelson

This original acrylic abstract was inspired by the fantastic view into the Grand Canyon as seen from the Skywalk. The Skywalk is a $30 million glass and steel horseshoe that juts 4,000 feet above the Grand Canyon floor.

The painting is on gallery wrap Signature canvas with the sides painted. It arrives ready to hang.

View From Boreas Pass, 06108

By Carol Nelson

This painting shows just a portion of the glorious view from a trail on Boreas Pass, just southeast of Breckenridge, CO. Several trails start at the top of the pass near timberline and go UP. It was like the scene from The Sound of Music.

Industrial Chic: Red 05708

By Carol Nelson

This abstract is not my usual geologic theme. Having aluminum pieces on wood panel makes it seem more industrial or ultra-contemporary to me. The color palette and the wood framing give it warmth.
I did a piece called Industrial Chic (purchased by the city of Aurora, CO) a couple years ago that also featured the use of aluminum. I used metal paint on the aluminum to give a slightly distressed look - I don't want it to look like the refrigerator! It looks very bright in the photo because it happened to catch the light - not as bright in person.
The aluminum was purchased at Home Depot. I attached it to the panel by drilling holes through the metal and the wood. The metal brads fit through the hole and flare out on the back. I also used glue to secure the pieces.

Poppy Profusion, 05508

By Carol Nelson

This original oil painting was painted on Dick Blick 9x9 Museum Wrap canvas (2 3/8 inch deep). Blick will begin marketing these 9x9 four packs in a couple months. They are a joy to work on and with the extra wide stretcher bars, the presentation is truly dramatic.

I have done several paintings in diptych, triptych and quadtych format. I think a relatively mundane subject can take on a whole new dimension when painted on multiple canvases. Blick is having a sale on multi-pack canvases right now. Check it out at http://www.dickblick.com/zz071/46/.

Pretty in Blue, 05608

By Carol Nelson

Hydrangeas are so fascinating. The color of the blooms varies from blue to pink depending on the pH of the soil. I usually paint poppies in oranges and yellows, so it is a treat for me to feature the other side of the palette.

This original 10x10 inch acrylic is on gallery wrap canvas (1.5 inch deep), so framing is not necessary. For purchase information, please see my website:
