finally....created my first newsletter

By Kelly Parker

my first newsletter....boy was this fun to do! i just created it as an email to send out. i know there are several places to get email services but i don't have the money to pay for one and the free ones have ads on them. Ads are not something i want in an email newsletter, so i decided to do one myself. actually it was pretty easy after i decided what i wanted to put in it then i created the header and started to add the content. i really was fun!! if you would like to subscribe just let me know and i will add you to the list.

At left, are some oil paintings i created in late 2006.

Studio time

By Kelly Parker

Lemons on blue green
www.kellyparkerdesigns.com

There has been talk lately in my local art group about studio time. We have all discussed how it is classified personally. Some people only count the time that they work on art in the studio, others count the time in the studio, taking pictures, creating thumbnails, cleaning up or arranging the studio, and still others count only the time spent actually creating a finished piece.

Personally, for me, I count any time I spend in the studio as creative time, even when i am arranging or cleaning because I think this calms the inner muse and allows me to clearly "see" what I need to accomplish. I count those walks outside as time to clearly "see" my environment to help me put together a landscape composition. I count those times that i sit with my sketchbook and make some thumbnails to help me "see" what I want to create and how I want to place those items. So I guess for me anytime I work on some aspect of my art I count that as studio time. I think for me it is a more artful life...a way to capture more art in my life.

What about you? How do you view your studio time? Leave your posts in the comments section.

selling prints vs originals

By Kelly Parker

ok, heres the thing...

By Kelly Parker

i have about 3 weeks to come up with several paintings of "the Artist Within", i am a part of a larger group of artists that have been asked to display our work at the local art center and the theme is the Artist Within...i have several ideas but when i actually get to the studio i draw a blank. i want to incorporate lots of color because of course that is how i paint...kind of abstract expressionist. well i don't just want to paint a landscape...unless i do something Henry Mooreish on canvas. i want to paint something that is me, but WHAT IS THAT!!!! when i was in college i did a series of pears...they kinda look like me, well i am not green, red or yellow but the shape resembles me. so here is my dilemma....what represents me, The Artist Within. i will keep you posted and if you have any ideas, just pass them along.
here is a family portrait i painted in 2006 - the guitar represents my son and daughter, the foil at the bottom of the painting represents my son, the mug/stein represents my husband, an avid Budweiser stein collector, and the books, the pear, and paintbrushes represent myself. i will be submitting this painting to the art show...

minature art/small art?

By Kelly Parker

do you create miniature or small works of art? do you sell many of them? if so, do you frame them or send them unframed or both? do you create art work that is square or rectanguler? i am contemplating do some small works of art, 3 by 5, 4 by 4, ATC size or smaller and wanted some feedback on your small art work. leave me some thoughts and don' forget to sign my guestbook on my new website for a free gift(see previous post) http://www.kellyparkerdesigns.com/

artists are you...

By Kelly Parker

are you looking for someplace to sell your work? do you sell your work on commission or wholesale? where do you sell your art? do you invest in art shows? are you in a co-op gallery or other retail establishment where you have to work so many hours a week? these are just some questions i have been pondering lately.

i guess some answers for me are yes i amlooking to sell my art work someplace, i have it in several small gift/galleries across Michigan but i want to expand. how do i do this? i usually go door to door locally but not over a hours drive...

i sell my work on commission and wholesale but i would like to do more volume but not to have it commerically made somewhere else...does that make sense? sure greeting cards would be great to sell commerically but i am not sure i want to do that with anything else

i haven't done art shows in quite a while but i have been pondering doing a few locally to build up some customers, mailing list, etc.

as far as working in a gallery so many hours a week, unless they have a high volume of traffic i am not interested because my time can be better spent creating art then sitting around waiting for customers to come in the door...i have started with 2 of these type of galleries in the past and there is never enough traffic to make it worth my time.

well if you are reading this leave me a comment on what you are doing to promote yourself...next time i will talk about writing an artist statement. do you have one?

By Kelly Parker

i have been seeing this on several of the blogs that i have visited recently and thought it was a good idea. it goes with my handmade pledge which you can see on the right side of this blog, just scroll down and click on the handmade button if you are interested.

i know it is suppose to be pay it forward but i like the idea that i "play" with my art supplies to make a handmade gift for you and so "Play it Forward" is what i am doing....

ok here goes with my "play it forward" -

Melissa from http://alterediva.blogspot.com/ has invited everyone to take part in this Play It Forward.

I think this is a great idea and I am willing to "play it forward", are you?

I will send a handmade gift to the first 3 people who leave a comment on my blog to this entry requesting to join this ‘Play It Forward’ exchange. I don’t know what that gift will be and you may not receive it tomorrow or next week, but you will receive it within the year that is my promise!

The only thing you have to do in return is ‘Play It Forward’ by making the same promise on your blog with a link back to me at http://www.kparkerdesigns.blogspot.com/ So basically, if you comment, I’ll send you a handmade gift that I’ll make! Be sure to include your email. Once you sign up, copy and paste the above paragraph on your blog, and three other lucky people will be recipients of your handmade work. You must post this on your blog to be eligible.

I received my invite to play from Moonwillow at http://moonwillow.blogspot.com/

A: “You sir, are an impasto.”

Lap top and website

By Kelly Parker

well, i just ordered my new Dell laptop and have started my new website. ..my laptop will be here sometime the week of January 21st, i am so excited!! i can go to the college and use it or at the coffee shop and no more waiting for the dial up connection. i am hoping to be able to get a wireless card soon, the dial up is slower than snail mail at home. here is the lap top i have coming...it is a Dell XPS M1530 in black.

i have lots to do for the website and i realized i should have waited another month to actually start it...i need to take pictures of all my work and type up some copy for the pages. i decided to go with www.homestead.com, they have been around a long time and after searching around and looking at many websites and hosting sites i made my decision. i had been with homestead a long time ago with a free site and they were easy to use. it just somehow seemed the right place for me at this time. i will let you know more when i go live.

Laptops and webhosting

By Kelly Parker

well, i have been searching the web for a hosting site...something easy to use and relatively reasonably priced. do you have any ideas? who do you use for your hosting site? did you build it yourself?

what about a laptop? what are some must have features? i am currently looking at Dell but i could be swayed in other directions.

i really am at a loss as to what i really want to do for these things....any comments would be helpful!! thanks.

Now to sign all the paperwork and get started...stay turned to receive updates on what i will be doing with the money. YIPPEEE!!!!!

New things for the new year...

By Kelly Parker

i have decided to do a blog for Art for Elementary Teachers. i will add information for teachers such as places for them to find lesson plans, artist information, art events, pictures of their work, and many other informational items they can use in class. it will be more for finding information than for use in the classroom but i think it will be fun and educational as well. i am considering having the students post intelligent comments for extra credit. what do you think?

i will also be teaching a new class at the college next semester, Art Appreciation, so for the next several weeks i will be writing curriculum. i already have some ideas for this class...now to get them on paper and worked out for the classroom. this class will take lots of research and will be time consuming in that i will be putting up the weeks in power point for easier use.

and the next big thing, i am having surgery on December 17, 2007 so i will have to have my classes done, holiday shopping done and anything else i have to do before the 17th...fun, fun, fun!!
