the monkey known as…..

By Sue Tyler

Tonight i had a lovely evening enjoying cocktails and craft with Miss Millie

we got our start time wrong, but by 7pm we were well settled into Hawthorn Lounge with delightful drinks.

My personal favorite was the De-Lovely.

I was also delighted to be joined by a new gentleman friend who also has a strong attachment to cocktails. His only problem is that he’s not got a name.

As we all know no young monkey can truly make his way in the world without a name, so dear friends i ask you.

Where should i look for inspiration?

I’m tempted by tradditional cocktail names, like Manhattan, or Margratia but despite his predelicions is that a tad too obvious?

perhaps something more befiting his irish ancestory would be suitable?

i live to craft

By Sue Tyler

craft&cocktailreally truly i do

it makes me happy

it bring joy into my world

when i have a massive knot of stress sitting on my shoulders a little bit of crafting make it go away. Unless the stress is part of a craft induced catastrophe.

I also find cocktails make my world a better place

especially ones crafted by an expert

those special few who understands the fine art of mixing drinks

So what better thing to do than head over to the extremely elegant and divine hawthorn lounge

get my craft on while enjoying some carefully crafted cocktails

but also essential to this endeavor is fine company

and i shall be doing that this Saturday night june 20th from 6pm with Miss millie

why not join us

Plastic bottle fun

By Sue Tyler

gren-pet-purse-4here’s all the lovely instructions on how to make a PET purse just for yourself

You need:

1 x plastic bottles (i went with green from iced tea bottles because it looks pretty)
1 x stanley knife
1 x glove (a heavy gardening glove is good this is to stop you cutting yourself with the knife)
1 x scissors
1 x small hobby drill or awl
1 x zip (you can match your  bottle or go for a contrast)
1 x needle ( i used birch number 20)
1 x fishing line (you can go for normal thread i liked the illusion of see through fishing line)
1 x non markable pen
1 x ruler
1 x long rope (the length you want a bag)

using your ruler and pen mark out a line around the base of your bottle
holding the bottle with a glove in one hand and using you stanley knife in the other  cut along a line big enough to fit your scissors in and stop
continue cutting along the line with your scissors, and if need be trim where you think it’s needs tidying up
wipe off the pen marks
do the same for the second bottle

mark out dots along the freshly cut rim set them 1/2 cm down and  1cm apart
using your needle or craft drill poke holes where you have marked
thread your needle with fishing line and sew on the zipper.
and you have a coin purse
orange-pet-purse-2
to make a bag
poke holes in the top of your new purse
thread each of of the rope in a hole,  and tie a good secure knot
and you have a bag

now if you are wondering what to do with the left over plastic you can still put it in your recycling bin

and if you can’t be arsed getting crafty here’s a linky where you can go shopping for my wee PET purse

and it’s called a PET purse becuase it looks like a Muppet and it’s made of Polyethylene terephthalate aka PET plastic

apparently it also looks like an hermes apple purse, but it’s a lot less expensive

ipod cosy from fused plastic

By Sue Tyler

ipod cosy from fused plastic, originally uploaded by ellipse.

I managed to get myself every environmentally aware on Good morning today. I taught myself and then everyone else how to successfully fuse plastic shopping bags, and then i added a little crafty magic and turned the fused plastic into teeny tiny ipod cosy.
This features a fish from a plastic CD bag purrchased at fish eye disks which you might remember if you lived and loved music in wellington. fish eye was home to Colin Morris who i swear if you sung him a tune he could name the song and the record it came from.

But enough about the music

here’s links to the instructions on fusing bags and making the ipod cosy

of you you want check out the videos of me and the lovely sarah, who you’ll see has excellent taste in nail polish

Sneak Peak at Friday

By Sue Tyler

StampFrame 2, originally uploaded by ellipse.

I’ve just put the finishing touches and tweaks on friday’s projects for Good Morning. It often takes a long time between idea, test run and final product, normally i don’t cut the preparation time so thin, but I’ve been pretty preoccupied with tying up loose ends from Craft2.0 Wellington in April and trying to find funding for Craft2.0 in July.

I’m also really pleased to say my trial time with TVNZ is up and i’m now a confirmed regular. Words can’t express how exciting and special this is, I just love making things and dreaming up new projects and now instead of having unfinished ideas sitting in my head i get to share them with the world.

tomorrow is ANZAC day

By Sue Tyler

ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.
April 25th was the day the ANZAC force landed at Gallipoli in turkey during WW1
In the word of the RSA - who are brilliant “Since the first anniversary of the Gallipoli landing in 1916, ANZAC Day has evolved to acknowledge the sacrifice and service of subsequent wars and to encompass new understandings of the full impact of armed conflict on those who have served their country.”

To remember members of my family i planted a virtual poppy.

Fashion Friday

By Sue Tyler

040309I’ve had loads of lovely emails about what i wear on TV every Friday. Being a Curvy girl i do know how hard it is to find lovely pretty clothes that look good and make you feel pretty. I’ve been very lucky to have the help of lovely Jo at PrettyPrettyPretty when it comes to fashion, and getting me into bright colours and dresses as opposed to my former always wear of black top and black trousers.

So I’m going to write each Friday about what I’ve been wearing that day.

First up my favourite thing about today’s outfit, 3 lovely rings that Martha at WandaHarland kindly lent me.

All three rings are NZ made and since i dropped them back at the shop you can pop into the shop now and buy them. Possibly my favourite is the fabric ring made using Japanese kimono fabric, it’s such a delicate look, but the ring is beautifully strong and sturdy so it’s perfect for the Crafty lifestyle.

From my own ring collection (i have a lot of rings, becuase i keep losing them and buying more at every Craft2.0) I’m wearing a silver cast button ring i picked up at Pataka and a vintage red ring my mum used to wear.img_2759

My necklace is one of my creations, a beautiful unicorn. I’m a big fan of unicorns and you can buy my unicorns in person at Craft2.0 on April the 11th at TheNewDowse. Or if you can’t make it to craft2.0 you can head over to my shop on felt where there is a selection of unicorns to choose from.

Today i  wore a hot pink Dress and a cute little black cardy, both from the Kate Madison range at the Warehoouse. I totally love this dress so much i have in in black as well. I was also lucky enough to pick both up at a sale so the outfit set me back $35 in total, which was an extremly sweet deal.

Flying Away

By Sue Tyler

3397629928_7cf3b2aac2_bI’m pretty excited to annouce that after my holiday in lovely sunny hawkes bay i’m back on Good Morning this friday at 10.10am.

If you are in NZ you can watch it on TV or online by heading over to the Good Morning website and click on Watch the Show.

As always i love sharing a sneak peak here on SuperVery, and this week i’m getting into the Craft2.0 groove by fooling around with some Craft2.0 flyers. We had a rather large amount of flyers put together this year, so i kept a few aside for a cute little craft project.

I really love desiging and creating the craft2.0 flyers so always feel a little sad when i say goodbye to each fairs promo material. So  thanks to the magic of the internet and a bit of lateral thinking i worked out a way to keep them forever.

Becuase i only have so much wall space in her house to hang posters.

For those of you who understand the pain of a failed crafting experiement here’s a look at what happened the first time i tried to turn my flyers into something, unraveling everything was worse than sorting out the cords behind my TV set ;)

3397634890_d4bd87ccd2_b

while i’ve worked with flyers. this project can be done with magazines, or any kind of paper/light card you can get your hands on.

and that’s all i’m going to say for now, you’ll have to tune in tomorrow for more.

World of Wearable Arts

By Sue Tyler

I’ve been a fan of WOW ever since it’s early days in nelson, one of my favorite all time WOW costume is still the papier mache one from either 1987 or 1988.

wow-flyerOne thing always amazers me is the time it must go into creating something for WOW but also the important things you need to watch out for when creating for WOW.

There is a huge pile of work, and also once you have your inspiration how do you get started and well it’s just blows my mind. Thankfull i gewt to keep it intact, becuase the amazing fifi who does Kids Crafts on Good moring is a former  finalist and award winner from WOW.

And she’s sharing all her creative and construction know how in one perfect one day workshop to find your creative feet and spread your wearable wings. from 10am till 5pm on the 4th of april

For more info and registration details head over to fifi’s site

I’m going to be all busy crafting up a storm for Craft2.0 the following weekend, but if you even have a bit of an idea about creating for WOW this is the place to head off to.

Buck

By Sue Tyler

Buck, originally uploaded by ellipse.

Hi everyone not, much to say, I’m having a delightful holiday in napier, enjoying the sunshine,m the warmth and the simplicity of just hanging out at the farm.

Not doing any farmwork also adds to the farm, the one thing i did miss this week was not appearing on Good Morning, even though it’s only been a few weeks i just love preparing for good morning friday i felt just a little bit lost on Friday. But don’t worry I’ll be back, and i’m spending a quality amount of my time her in napier dreaming up some really new, unusual and fun creations to demonstrate on Good Morning.

I’ve been hunting around op shops and also mitre10 mega for some new and old materials to use

the result so far is much paint over my clothes and some paper cuts.

Over the side her is my uncle’s dog buck, he is the best of dogs and exceptionally lovely cvompany

Tshirts make me smile

By Sue Tyler

I’m planning a lovely holiday in hawkes bay for 2 whole weeks, where i plan to relax on a farm, swim in the sea and watch some cricket if the sun gods shine upon NZ cricket.

This has meant i’ve bee trying to get fresh projects out the door and stock up of new projects to do on holiday.

mosaic7034047One of the fastest, probaly the most easy  and (if you look around town) the most common projects, is covering canvas boards with fabric. Well for Good Morning today i pulled together a twist on this idea using old tshirts instead of fabric.Everyone i know has a stash of tshirts they’ve kept for sentimental reasons (my stash of concernt shirts is a great example) or in the case of this hippo, is something brought for  a nephew who was too big for the shirt, but it was so cute i could never just throw it away.

Here’s a look at some of the images on how to put it all together and also head over to the Good Morning site on TVNZ where you’ll see some lovely instructions on how to do it yourself.

And if you are lucky some video

Pinata and photoblock fun

By Sue Tyler

mosaic2820230So here’s some links to my appearance on Good Morning

first up a video clip of each project

Pinatas

Photo Blocks

and the instructions for pinatas and the instructions for photoblocks

I had the most amazing time on Good Morning everyone who works on the show is just incredibly lovely. Setve who i was crafting with couldn’t have been more awseome, I’ve always enjoyed his film and DVD reviews so it was great to meet him in real person.

On a geek note, if anyone knows a way to download the videos from TVNZ I’d love to know, that way i can keep them all and also make sure my auntys all get to see them.

Marble Magnet Friday

By Sue Tyler

I’m really excited to announce i’ll be back on Good Morning this friday3308973416_69121657ea_o

I’ll be teaching one of my all time favourite and fun crafts Marble Magnets

the great thing about marble magnets is that they are super easy to make and are also the most lovely gifts when you package half a dozen or so together in a gift box

I’m reasonably sure the small marbles will just show up as huge balls of reflection and not much else, which i think we can all agree doesn’t make for interesting watching

I’m teaching using large sized marbles, but as a sneak peak for everyone reading SuperVery of what the project is going to look like.

and also just to show that’ I’ve been making marble magnets for aaaaages, a couple of images from my flickr stream 2 cameras ago. which as we know in internet time is like 100 million years ;)

and yes next post links to the tutorials from last time, and video for those who missed out watching. I know not everyone is as lucky as me to be able to watch TV during the day.

Internet blackout

By Sue Tyler

I support the Internet Blackout on February 23.

SuperVery  has returned to normal

and here’s an update: courtesy of Public Address
While there was lots of work publicly i know there was much going on behind the scenes, many thanks go to those quiet workers who spoke and dealt directly with the government

The Government announces delay in 92A enactment until March 29. If no agreement by then, it will be suspended.

Mini Piñata making and Good Morning

By Sue Tyler

3274113210_afffd85e9e_oSo today is the day i make my television debut on TVNZ’s Good Morning

I’m due on air at 10.15 am and if you want head over to the good morning site and watch it online. After the show the instructions for both crafts will be up online and I’ll link to them both.

I’m excited, nervous and just hope nothing fails on the day.

I’ve set myself a bit of a task by agreeing to do two projects, a photo  block & some extremly cute Mini Piñatas.

My goal for each project was to bring together some gifts that can be made in a few hours, and work both as Valentine’s  day gifts and year round gifts. Both of these fit the bill.

the Mini Piñata’s do take a little longer than the photo blocks, but when you have half a dozen all in a basket the look extremely adorable and brighten anyone’s day. Especially when they realise there are presents inside.

If anticipate is half the fun, then these bring it up to 75% as it does take a little working to open them. The little ribbons or sting at the top of each Piñata do make it a little easier, but if you want to be especially tricky, just wrap the entire Piñata up.

That’s also a great idea for Easter as they can make for a very unique easter prestn, especially if you want to avoid chocolate  overload

Playing Around with The Commons

By Sue Tyler

I’m a big fan of flickr and a big fan of history and very clearly i live the life of a crafty girl.

So i decided to mix up the 3 and make a little gift for a friend of mine.

The first thing i needed to do was find a great photo.3271841200_5c871ff396_o

While i was tempted by some of the colour images from George Eastman house, especially their http://flickr.com/photos/george_eastman_house/sets/72157606226772243/, as soon as I set my eyes on this image of the Franz Joseph Glacier i was inspired.

That’s the great thing about the flickr commons, it increases access to publicly-held photography collections, and becuase there are no known copyright restrictions associated with all those images, anyone can use them.

Photoblocks have been around for a while and the simplicity of them works especially well for this image so i was ready to get crafty

So with a little work here’s my creation

If you want to make a photo block of your own but don’t know where to get started, check me out on TV this Friday the 13th of Feburary .

After the show airs, I’ll also link to some written instructions

Sam the koala

By Sue Tyler

Sam the KoalaI’m back and for my first post of the yeat I’m wirting about something very important

I’ve now found it impossible to watch the news or read the paper regarding the wild fires in Australia without getting beyond weepy.
We were on holiday there in 1983 during ash Wednesday and there is just no explaining about how scary it all is.

On of the big things with fires in Australia is the eucalyptus oil in the trees, as an oil it and just burns and burns like a ball of fire as it moves from tree to tree. That’s also why the fires can move so fast

but  something made me smile today Animals of all shapes and sizes are starting to limp, stagger or be carried from the worst-affected fire areas.

“Sam the koala was rescued by firefighters after it was found roaming a burned up forest 90 miles from Melbourne. Sam had burnt paws, but is doing better now and will hopefully be released back into the wild in about 5 months”
koala
I did what i could and dontated to the australian red cross there are other groups inculding animal specific groups you can dontate to.

Even if you just miss having coffee today and donate that, you’ve helped make a difference.

Fabric Badges

By Sue Tyler

badge-2i have a badge machine, in fact i have two, and nothing makes me happier when i find a new use for them. right now I’m totally into old vintage fabrics and especially doilies and the like, lovely hand sewn things that use to be everywhere but served no purpose except to gather dust and look pretty.

So i;ve taken some beautiful handmade  creations and up cycled them into 1.5 in ches badges. so now you have something beautiful, handmade that serves no function expect to look pretty. But since looking pretty is fun and decorating yourself or your bag is fun it’s a win win situation.

Plus a badge can be used in place of buttons on a jacket, used to hold a wrap together in fact badges can be pretty darn funcational

And yes this an a number of others are for sale online at felt, In person at InkyPinky in karori, or Green living in petone. If you are interested in a whole pile of badges, either fabric, or photos or a custom design, drop me a line

Glitter Critter - Basically Bear

By Sue Tyler

glittercritter-3I’m not sure if i’ve spent quality time discussing how much i love glitter, in fact i love anything sparkly and shiny.

The highest complement i can pay to anything is two simple words ‘mmmmm shiny’

so i matched my love of designing with ponoko with my love of all things glitter and transformed some of my laser cut critters into glitter critters. First off the production line (working with glitter is very much a production line becuase of how many coats of gloss you need to add to ensure the glitter doesn’t fall off o fell too rough) is a bear. Because i love and adore bears.

I do hope somebody loves this bear enough to take him home, beacuse like paddington bear, all bears deserve a good home.

so if you;ve fallen in love or think somone might love my glitter critter head over to felt to find him

Monkey Troubles

By Sue Tyler

monkeytrouble-2I’m a big fan of animals, and there is one thing i can’t resist which is a visit to a zoo. It’s pretty much safe to say I feel extremely lucky to live in Wellington with our wonderful zoo, but also that i got a chance to visit the San Diego Zoo twice during one vist there a couple of years ago.

I’m pretty fond of elephants and bears, and  there will be a super special post about elephants in the next day or so. but I’m also a fan of monkeys. So I created Mr monkey troubles who is an extremely cute little monkey brooch.

You can own one for yourself by either visiting my felt shop, or checking out the shop at Wellington Zoo, At the zoo you’ll also find a collection of other animals i’ve created.

By Sue Tyler

so make a vote and then see you next thursday at Mighty mighty

Meet the Skull Family

By Sue Tyler

I’m pleased to introduce

Mrs and Mr Skull to the SuperVery Range.

You can tell the difference becuase she has a very nifty and cuite little bow in the side of her skull.

He is a little more manly, obviously been in a bit of a fight (over which Show is better True Blood or Buffy is my guess) and he shows signs of that.

Or he’s got a kick arse tattoo, i can’t quite decide. But i do like the idea of it being a light bolt rather than a crack

But either Way Mrs and Mr skull can never bear to be parted from each other so i’m selling them as a double trouble special, you get both memeber of the skull family for NZD$30 from felt.co.nz or if you’d like to have a particular colour choice or combination you can order through ponoko. Just have a browse of ponoko’s materials calatogue and tell me what colours you’d like when you make an order.

you can even mix colours up if you like :D

finding Supervery in Shops

By Sue Tyler

Well as of today i have added to my number of physical stockists

1. WandaHarland - possibly my favourite shopping shop in the whole world, simpoly becuase i never seem to leave without buying a little something. For example these cutie amazing cushions by sue from seam

Wandaharland is home to my badges, big and small, Magnet Sets, and a collection of pendants and hand felted jewellery. Since i sold out of Felted necklaces WandaHalrd is the olnly place to score them

2. Minerva

situated at 245 Cuba Street, Wellington.

Minerva is home base to NZ quilter magazine, has the most comphrenshive selection of crafting books and also sells a few fabric supplies.

They branched out into beautiful gifts just before chistmas and there you can find my Rose fabric corsages, My embriodered fabric badges, and a few of my wooden pendants.

3. Wellington Zoo:

At the Zoo you can find a select series of animal jewellery

inculding the most awesome wooden giraffee- made

from wood sourced from a sustainable plantation - plus it’s a griaffee how can you not love it. everyone loves it

I’m also really proud to be the person to supply the zoo with all their magnets and badges.

my especial favoutie is the sunbear, you can only get these magnets and badges at the zoo shop.As each badge is made using a zoo image and once they are made up they belong to the zoo.

But if you are ever in need of a custom badge order let me know i can make magic happen for you.

Hopefully on friday i can announce two more stores you can get Supervery in Wellington

Right now i need to go recovered from the dentist, 4 fillings in one sitting is not my idea of fun, although the cat is very please to curl up in bed with me

Tally Ho Cameo

By Sue Tyler

Ok the title is inspired by The Clean, but that’s pretty much where their influence ends as far as my latest creations on felt go. The jewellery itself is another of those twists on the heart shape i like to have fun with.

this time it’s taking a cameo style with a silhouette and then placing it in a heart shape.
Somehow it works, don’t ask me how, my design skills are very much based on creating things that i like as oppsed to knowing design fundamentals.

big tip: honestly one other reason i create so many things in heart shapes is that they are so extremely popular. One thing is pretty much universally true you can never go wrong with a heart shape for a gift.

unless of course it’s a gift for someone you don’t really like, but then why are you buying the gift in the first place?

this is also a case of me playing around with colours, moving away from basic black and white is a bit of a stretch for me, but so far it seems to be working, and the great thing is, a colour go great with a black outfit, and trust me pretty much every woman alive has basic black in their wardrobe, so this is a great way to add a spash of colour without being too over the top.

so if you like, head over to felt, or ponoko for some heart shaped cameo fun.

Retro Hearts

By Sue Tyler

In working with Laser Cutting and acrylics, I’ve really enjoyed playing around with the simple heart shape.

Mostly becuase i’ve discovered that even with something very simple like a heart I can create some unique and fun items of jewellery.

Resently I’ve been playing around with layering and colours, yes i know it all sounds a bit like buzz word central, but i can’t help it my devotion to project runway had to have some effect on me at some point ;)

So that and a bit of a retro moment came together for some new designs. Some fun pieces that are a little bit inspired by twiggy, the mod squad and mary quant.

In this instance it’s colourful hearts with a flower layered on top. They debuted at thorndon fair this weekend and sold out, but i kept a few special aside for online, becuase that’s the kind of girl i am.

So head over to my lovely shop on felt if you are from NZ or if you live over the seas head over to ponoko where you can pay in USD and have shipping covered.

I can also create the flowers and hearts in any colour you like. It does take a little longer becuase it’s a custom order i need to place through ponoko, but the price is still the same. Just check out the Ponoko materials catalouge for some ideas.

Decorations for the Season

By Sue Tyler

New to my Felt store

Is a small and rather exclusive selection of handmade Christmas decorations.

First for sale is this extremely cute heart themed ball, perfect  to hang from a tree, a window or maybe to dangle from a Christmas wreath.

It’s a Very cute handmade Christmas decoration.
It’s possibly beyond cute.

And the exclusive part comes when i confirm it’s very hard to get hold of that many matching buttons to create a single themed decoration. So I’ve only made 4 so far this year.

I covered a Styrofoam sphere in  silver paint  and then added heart buttons of many different colours using shiny pearly pins, for just that extra bit of brightness. But don’t be worried about things falling of, a light touch of glue ensures nothing is going to fall away after just one season. Also it’s a really light decoration so won’t droop too much on your tree.

It’s very much a seasonal gift or a special treat for yourself, and while one of my decorations costs the same as 20 plain sparkly ones imported from China, this one was made with love, time, thought and care.

The lime green ribbon can be adjusted to suit the length of drop you want from your decoration
I don’t have exact dimensions but it fits snugly inside a mini pringles can :D

I’ll be uploading 3 more of these buttoned themed decorations over the next few days so keep an eye out on my felt store for updates.

I’ve just finished - in time for The Thorndon Fair Tomorrow- a lovely series of rose inspired corsages. although i do wonder if there is such a thing as a lime green corsage, however the fabric and trim were beautiful and when it comes to crafting lovely things colour comes first.

Felt...like something different

I’ve kept a few aside for online, so if a beautiful vintage feel, but brand new rose strikes your fancy. Or you want something cheap but beyond cheerful to wear on a jacket, cardy, tank top, or like i do hooked around necklaces, then, head over to my felt shop

A Seahorse Special for Chistmas

By Sue Tyler

To celebrate the festive season I’m selling my beautiful blue seahorse for just NZD $20 including shipping. This seahorse is not available in any shops and can only be brought online.

I’ve always loved seahorses and since summer to me = beach, I thought I would play around with some fanciful beach creatures. I’ve chose tinted blue acrylic for the material as it has this great transparent sea effect.

this is a pendant, designed to be worn a lot, and if you are not convinced already by the look and the price, it might interest you to know it was a runner up in a ponoko design competition earlier this year.

In NZ please head over to my felt shop, where shipping in NZ is free
Outside NZ please head of to my ponoko shop where it’s being sold for USD$17 & international shipping is free.

Size:
2.5 inches long
1.5 inches wide (this is at the head which is at it’s very widest)

Custom jewellery

By Sue Tyler

One of the thing i love to do is work with beautiful NZ wool
and my wool supplier has the sweetest and most awesome colour ever. And i’ve managed to create some reasonable kick arse original necklaces and earrings from wool

since i’m having a bit of a break from workshops and event planning and taking a break on a farm. I got inspired with a bit of an idea. Everyone loves picking jewellery at a fair, but why not take it a step future

If you like the look of my felted necklaces, or would like to try felted earrings
for $40NZD i’ll make you a custom necklace
for $18NZD I’ll make you custom earrings
for $50NZD I’ll make you a custom necklace and earrings

here is the fun part, below is every single colour of wool i have in my stash
You get to pick up to 13 colours from that selection and i’ll turn those into a lovely necklace at the exact length you’d like. turn around should be & days at most from order (it take 3 days to make each bead)

So if you are keen for something pretty and new that only you own for Christmas party season

Here’s a jpg and you can click on it for a larger view or scroll down for a pdf link

Then email me with your choices,
you necklace will comprise 13 felt beads, and earrings are a single bead.
you can pick as many or as few colours as you like

for more info or to make an order
