Window Flowers Watercolor Painting

By Bunny Griffeth

Window Flowers watercolor painting is 7 x 10 inches on Arches 140 pound paper. This is also from a Wet Canvas WDE (weekend drawing event). A great break for me from my children's book illustrations. Almost done with book number one.

With all this rain we are having here, my thoughts for today are on water, but the kind that quenches our thirst rather than the kind that ruins our weekends.... there is also a 'water' for our souls. "If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and dink." John 7:37

Beavertail Park, Jamestown Watercolor Painting

By Bunny Griffeth

Beavertail Park, Jamestown, Watercolor Painting is about 12 X 16 inches done on Arches 140 pound paper. This is plein air painting done yesterday, which turned out to be a gorgeous day here in Rhode Island. I took lots of photos to work on paintings in my studio, but it's great to be outside to see the colors. I loved the contrast of those rocks and waves crashing against them and the delicate rose flowers that grow wild along the coast.

Just a reminder again that even though I am not posting here as regularly, I am painting every day! I have nearly completed the illustrations for the first book and ready to take them for scanning. A contract for a second book is "in the mail"....

And I would feel remiss if I didn't give you a word for today....this is from "The courage to Change" and is a quote by Francis de Sales:

"You learn to speak by speaking, to study by studying,
to run by running, to work by working; and just so
you learn to love God and man by loving.
Begin as a mere apprentice and the very power of
love will lead you on to become a master
of the art."

Prison Door Watercolor Painting

Prison Door watercolor painting is 12.5 x 10.5 inches on Arches 140 pound paper. This is from a Wet Canvas Watercolor Studio June challenge, reference photo which I enjoyed doing. I will attach the 'plaque' to the back of the painting, photo below.

Doors are interesting. I'm thinking of the possibility of doing a series of doors from different places.... They represent so many things...

There is no state of final fulfillment.
Each change opens new doors and ushers in new possibilities.

Indian - Sarcee Tribe - Watercolor Painting

By Bunny Griffeth

Indian - Sarcee Tribe - Jack Plume -watercolor painitng is 7.75 x 7.75 inches on Sennelier 140 pound paper. This is from a Wet Canvas reference photo. There were 3 challenges---to do a black and white in color or vice versa, to do some local history searching and 3rd to show everyone. This photo was in black and white (for challenge #1).

I first noticed a house on the corner not for from me that had a plaque that said 1757...surrounded by a white picket fence, .and I am amazed at how well the house is kept up. There’s an old carriage house, including carriage, a well in front. One of these days I will take my camera and get some pictures - I think it would be a great painting. Anyway, the challenge has spurred me to do some research on our little Oaklawn village.

This is the Oaklawn Baptist Church, one of 2 central buildings of 35 that comprise the village of Oaklawn in Cranston, purchased from the indians for settlement. The second is our library, which was a school house. Here is the full information at this link, if you're interested: http://www.cranstonri.com/generalpage.php?page=110

and this excerpt:

“Archaeologists have determined that, from about 1500 to 1800 B.C., the area near Furnace Hill Brook was inhabited by Native Americans who fashioned bowls, pipes and other tools from soapstone mined from a nearby quarry. Pottery-making and the growing of maize, beans and squash were major changes introduced in the area from about 500 B.C. to the colonial period. By the time the first European settlers arrived, the Narragansett Indians had at least six villages in Cranston, although none has been found within the Oaklawn district.”

From there I did some research on the indians: the Narragansett Tribe, from various sources, and found out many of them were killed during King Phillip’s war even though they were neutral from the other warring tribes, and many of the homes in the Oaklawn settlement were burnt down during that same war.

Garden Pond Watercolor painting, 12 x 16 inches on Arches 140 pound paper. This is from a plein air painting day at the Botanical Gardens in Roger Williams Park. Three Yellow Roses Watercolor Painting

By Bunny Griffeth

Three Yellow Roses watercolor painting is 7 x 10 inches, on Arches 140 pound paper. The yellow rose represents friendship, and so it's fitting that there are three, and they are in intimate relationship with each other.

Reading this morning from a chapter called Silent Nights and Solitary Days in Max Lucado's "Traveling Light" book, he talks about how loneliness is not the absence of faces, but the absence of intimacy. This may be how God gets our attention. Max uses an example of going on a long ride with a friend's car with only a CD player and your friends classical music selection, which you don't like, to listen to. By the end of your trip, you may be "this isn't so bad". In the pain of our loneliness we may turn to God who so wants us to hear his music.

"He has a rhythm that will race your heart
and lyrics that will stir your tears.
You want to journey to the stars?
He can take you there.
You want to lie down in peace?
His music can soothe your soul."

Just a reminder that even though I am not posting here as often as usual, I am daily painting. I am currently working on the illustrations for a children's book.

Pink Hibiscus watercolor painting, 5 x 7 inches on Fabriano 140 pound paper. This image is from the Flutterby butterfly exhibit at the zoo last fall.

"Now he can help those who are tempted."
Hebrews 2:18
I love the picture that Max Lucado "Next Door Savior" paints of "Jesus, angry enough to purge the temple, hungry enough to eat raw grain, distraught enough to weep in public, fun-loving enough to be called a drunkard, winsome enough to attract kids, weary enough to sleep in a storm-bounced boat, poor enough to sleep on dirt, and borrow a coin for a sermon illustration, radical enough to get kicked out of town, responsible enough to care for his mother, tempted enough to know the smell of Satan, and fearful enough to sweat blood.
But why?.....So that you would know, whatever you're facing, he knows how you feel."

Seal Watercolor Painting

Seal watercolor painting, 5 x 7 inches, and done on Fabriano 140 pound paper.

Some thoughts this morning on contentment from Max Lucado from "Safe in the Shepherd's Arms" - hope and encouragement from Psalm 23.... "What you have in your Shepherd is greater than what you don't have in life." All our "stuff" is not ours....ask any coroner....and our "stuff" is not who we are. So the economy, the stock market, global warming....we can surrender to God and trade that for God's "lightweight, tailor-made, sorrow resistant attache of gratitude".

Robbie Watercolor Painting

By Bunny Griffeth

Robbie watercolor painting from a black and white photo of my father, is 8 x 10 inches and is done on YES canvas. This is my first time using a canvas for watercolors, so it took me a while playing with this and I'm still not happy with it. You can wash off 95% of the paint, which I did twice. The paint lifts really easily when you're adding a wash, or blending colors, so you need a very soft brush and just the right amount of water.....so a learning curve, for sure. The advantage is it can be sprayed with a fixative and then varnished, and this particular canvas is a 3/4" wrapped canvas, so it could be hung without a frame at all, once the sides are painted. So, that's the reason for no posts for a few days here ....I've been doing the same painting over and over!
