Graceful, sensuous, leaning trees anchored in blue-violet rolling banks of earth and silhouetted by a scarlet red sunset in this original acrylic painting stimulate your senses. The photo of the trees that inspired the painting was taken in sunwashed daylight which resulted in a dull, bland green scene, devoid of color interest. The leaning characteristic of the trees intrigued me, however, and I saw potential in exaggerating the curves and adding vibrant color which are recurrent themes in my work. In a preliminary thumbnail sketch I arranged the trees and branches, deciding to add rolling mounds of earth under them and adding the twisting bark to them so that everything culminated into a rounding, graceful design that could capture the grandiose personality of these trees. The edges of the canvas are gallery-wrapped; meaning that the scene is painted around all four edges of the canvas and does not need a frame. This painting was juried into the Coos Art Museum Expressions West 2008 Exhibit at Coos Bay, Oregon and will be on display through July 5, 2008. The juror, Gary Faigin, founded the Gage Academy of Art in Seattle. You can also see it at my blog site, www.SandiWhetzel.blogspot.com and with my artist parthers at www.UmpquaRiverGallery.com
