Description

Globular Cluster is nine photograms pieced together like a mosaic, taken from the series CONSTRUCTING SPACE, which is made up of many more photograms of galaxies, comets, planets and stars.

Very few of us have ever been to space, yet we all believe we know what it looks like. Did you know that pictures of space are all received as raw computer data, distilled into black & white images and then coloured in to emphasise different visual information?

CONSTRUCTING SPACE explores the way these images are presented to us. Globular Cluster is a photogram depicting an image of space. It has much in common with a painting, as I choose the palette of colours I paint with. Instead of using a brush and pigment to create the colours and shapes, I record the trace of various light frequencies on the surface of the paper. The other ingredient is cosmic dust and micrometeorites which are placed on the paper before the exposure begins; the area below these particles will remain white.

Each luminogram is based on a real galaxy or heavenly body, but I have not used a telescope or camera in their conception, yet the stars in the image are truthful, as a trace of the star dust used in their creation.
